About Governor Harvey Wollman

HARVEY WOLLMAN was born in Frankfort, South Dakota. He was a member of the South Dakota Senate from 1969 to 1974, serving as Minority Leader in 1971-72 and Majority Leader in 1973-74. In his capacity as a Senator, he also chaired the Legislative Research Council Executive Board. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1974, remaining in that position until he assumed the duties of governor upon the resignation of Richard F. Kneip. As governor, Wollman worked to solve water problems, increase the budget for higher education, and accelerate repeal of the property tax. He left the governorship upon the election of William J. Janklow.
