David Smith is a Republican member of the Florida Legislature representing the state’s 38th House district. He was born on March 17, 1960, in Aberdeen, Maryland, U.S., and currently resides in Winter Springs, Florida, U.S.

Education: David Smith graduated from Texas A&M University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. He also holds a master’s degree from the Florida Institute of Technology, which he earned in 2000.

Political Career: Smith assumed office on November 6, 2018, succeeding Jason Brodeur. He defeated Democrat Lee Mangold in the November 6, 2018 general election, winning 51.27% of the vote. His political career has been marked by his commitment to the Republican party and his constituents in Florida’s 38th House district.

Military Career: David Smith was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program after graduating from Texas A&M University. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1984 and completed UH-1N helicopter pilot training. During his career, he flew more than 4,500 accident-free flight hours and made six extended deployments overseas or aboard ship, including a combat tour flying in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He had Command assignments or Program Management responsibility for three separate billion-dollar programs.

Current Committee Assignments: Smith currently serves on several committees in the Florida House of Representatives. These include the Joint Select Committee on Collective Bargaining (Chair), Justice Appropriations Subcommittee (Vice Chair), Infrastructure Strategies Committee, Transportation & Modals Subcommittee, Rules Committee, Ways & Means Committee, and Civil Justice Subcommittee.

Personal Life: In his personal life, David Smith enjoys college football, cycling, live music concerts, and sky diving. He is a member of the Southern Baptist church.
