Imani Barnes for Representative
Imani Barnes is a member of the Democratic Party and represents District 86 in the Georgia House of Representatives. She assumed office on January 9, 2023, and her current term ends on January 13, 2025. She ran for election to the Georgia House of Representatives to represent District 86 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022.
Imani Barnes lives in Tucker, Georgia. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from South Carolina State University and a master’s degree in public health. Her career experience includes working as a public health professional.
In the 2022 elections, Imani Barnes defeated Lisa Kinnemore in the general election for Georgia House of Representatives District 86. She received 89.2% of the votes, a total of 16,519 votes. Lisa Kinnemore received 10.8% of the votes, a total of 1,990 votes.
Imani Barnes is also a Public Health doctoral candidate, a biomedical research scientist, a youth development coach, and a parent and community advocate. As the District 86 Representative, she recognizes the need for inclusion at the capitol that reflects the interests of the diverse families, businesses, and underserved populations in the district.
She works tirelessly on issues to improve and protect public schools and students to better prepare the young people for modern life. One major effort is to provide free breakfast and lunch for students in Georgia’s public schools. She sponsored HB510, the “Healthy Start” bill that would provide free school meals to all students in the state.
Representative Barnes supports the rights of all citizens to have the freedom to live their lives as they choose. She works to expand Medicaid thus providing healthcare for more Georgians as she sponsored HB74 that would provide Lymphedema coverage under Medicaid.
As a woman of color and member of the LGBTQ community, Representative Barnes empathizes with concerns from constituents and understands that the success of the state’s future depends on inclusion of the unique heritage of our diverse residents. Her track record of identifying issues and partnering with experts to implement long-term solutions is necessary for inclusion and growth in our state.
