Martin McLaughlin is a member of the Illinois House of Representatives for the 52nd district. He is a member of the Republican Party and has been serving since January 13, 2021. He succeeded David McSweeney.

McLaughlin represents a district located in Lake County, Cook County, Kane County, Illinois, and McHenry County. The district includes all or parts of Algonquin, Barrington, Barrington Hills, Carpentersville, Cary, Crystal Lake, East Dundee, Fox River Grove, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Island Lake, Lake Barrington, Lake in the Hills, North Barrington, Oakwood Hills, Port Barrington, Prairie Grove, South Barrington, Tower Lakes, Trout Valley, and Wauconda.

In 2016, McLaughlin ran for District 26 of the Illinois Senate but was defeated in the primary by Dan McConchie. However, in the 2020 general election, McLaughlin won election to the Illinois House of Representatives.

As of July 3, 2022, Representative McLaughlin is a member of the following Illinois House committees: Appropriations - General Service Committee (HAPG), Commercial & Property Subcommittee (HJUA-COMM), Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, & IT Committee (HCDA), Ethics & Elections Committee (SHEE), Judiciary - Civil Committee (HJUA), Prescription Drug Affordability Committee (HPDA), Property Tax Subcommittee (HREF-PRTX), and Revenue & Finance Committee (HREF).

In the 2020 general election, McLaughlin won the election with 31,426 votes, which was 54.27% of the total votes. His opponents were Marci Suelzer from the Democratic Party who got 24,962 votes (43.11%) and Alla Sarfraz from the Green Party who got 1,521 votes (2.63%).

McLaughlin earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1987. He is a small businessman and a financial expert who owns an investment advisory firm. He is known for his advocacy for the government to run more like an efficient business.

McLaughlin is running for re-election to the Illinois House of Representatives to represent District 52. He is on the ballot in the Republican primary on March 19, 2024.
