Pishny was born and raised on a farm in Marshall County, Kansas, where he graduated from Valley Heights High School in Waterville in 1967. He pursued higher education at Fort Hays State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971 and a Master of Science degree in 1978. He later attended the College for Financial Planning, where he achieved Certified Financial Planner status in 1988, and completed further studies at the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1991.
