Kathy Schmaltz for Representative
Representative Kathy Schmaltz, elected to the House of Representatives in November 2022, proudly represents the 46th House District. This district includes the city of Jackson, Blackman and Leoni townships, and parts of Grass Lake and Summit townships in Jackson County. Additionally, it encompasses the city of Chelsea and Sylvan Township in Washtenaw County.
Committee Assignments
Kathy actively contributes to legislative affairs as a member of the House Energy, Communications, and Technology committee, as well as the Health Policy committee.
Educational Background
Kathy pursued her education at Michigan State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication arts.
Professional Experience
Following her time at MSU, Kathy worked in radio and later became the 6 and 11 p.m. news anchor, a writer, and the associate news director of community relations at WILX-TV 10, the NBC affiliate in Lansing. She held this position for 14 years. Kathy also hosted “In Focus,” a show that delved into public policy discussions with lawmakers and other influential figures. Former Gov. John Engler appointed her to the boards of the Michigan Education Trust and the Michigan Hospital Finance Authority.
Personal Life
Originally from Birmingham, Michigan, Kathy has called the Jackson area home for over 30 years. She is married to Patrick and has one son, Christopher, who is a teacher. A passionate Detroit Tigers fan, Kathy is one of the original members of the Mayo Smith Society, a group of Tigers fans across the country.
Community Engagement
Kathy has dedicated herself to supporting young people and others in need within the community. Her service extends to numerous non-profit boards, including Easter Seals of Michigan, Michigan Dyslexia Institute, United Way of Jackson, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wendy’s Charity Classic for Adoption, Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Foundation, and Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea. Kathy remains involved in several other organizations, including the Michigan Theatre of Jackson, 100 Women Who Care, and Good Shepherd Catholic Radio. She chairs the Jackson Grand Slam for Kids, demonstrating her commitment to community well-being.
