Debra Sariñana for Representative
Debra Marie Sariñana is an American educator and politician serving as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from the 21st district, which includes a portion of Bernalillo County.
Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sariñana graduated from Manzano High School in 1978. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from New Mexico State University in 1983 and a Master of Arts in mathematics education from the University of New Mexico in 2007.
Sariñana served in the United States Air Force Reserves from 1984 to 1990 as a medical service specialist. Prior to entering politics, she was a math teacher at Manzano High School. In the November 8, 2016 Democratic primary for the 21st district of the New Mexico House of Representatives, Sariñana defeated incumbent Idalia Lechuga-Tena. She took office in January 2017.
Sariñana is a member of the Democratic Party and is currently serving her third term representing House District 21 in Albuquerque. Her focus in the legislature has been education, crime, defense, and energy. She currently serves on the House Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and the House Appropriations and Finance Committee.
Sariñana’s professional experience includes working as a math teacher at Manzano High School. She also served in the U.S. Air Force. She was assigned to the following committees: Appropriations and Finance Committee, Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee, Vice Chair in 2023-2024. In 2021-2022, she was assigned to the Appropriations and Finance Committee and the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee. In 2019-2020, she was assigned to the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee and the House Education Committee. At the beginning of the 2017 legislative session, she served on the Education and Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committees.
She assumed office in 2017 and her current term ends on December 31, 2024. Sariñana is running for re-election to the New Mexico House of Representatives to represent District 21. She is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on June 4, 2024.
