Hugh Blackwell for Representative
Hugh Allen Blackwell, born on July 14, 1944, is an American politician in Burke County, North Carolina. He is a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 86, which covers half of Burke County.
Blackwell assumed office in 2009 and his current term ends on January 1, 2025. He is running for re-election to the North Carolina House of Representatives to represent District 86. He is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024.
Before his political career, Blackwell had a successful career as an attorney. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and is a partner in a law practice based in Valdese. In addition to his law practice, Blackwell is a board of trustees member for Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton. He also served as a member on the Burke County School Board before pursuing a political career in state government.
In terms of his legislative work, Blackwell has been assigned to several committees over the years. In the 2023-2024 session, he was assigned to the Appropriations Committee, Appropriations on Education Committee (as Vice Chair), Education - Community Colleges Committee, Education - K-12 Committee (as Chair), Election Law and Campaign Finance Reform, Health Committee, Judiciary III Committee (as Chair), and Regulatory Reform Committee.
As of the 2020 Census, North Carolina state representatives represented an average of 87,116 residents. After the 2010 Census, each member represented 79,715 residents. Members of the North Carolina House of Representatives serve two-year terms and are not subject to term limits. North Carolina legislators assume office on January 1 the year after their election.
