Joyce Waddell for Senator
Joyce Waddell is a member of the Democratic Party and has been serving as a senator in the North Carolina State Senate since January 1, 2015. She represents District 40.
Waddell has a rich educational background. She is a graduate of South Carolina State University and holds master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina A&T State University, and Appalachian State University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Before her tenure in the Senate, Waddell served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education in District 3. Her career spans three decades in education, including 21 years in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a teacher and administrator. This experience has greatly influenced her work in the Senate, where she has focused on education issues.
Waddell has also served on more than 15 boards and community organizations, many of which serve children, in both appointed and elected capacities.
In terms of her legislative work, Waddell has been assigned to various committees throughout her tenure. For the 2023-2024 session, she was assigned to the following committees: Appropriations on Education/Higher Education Committee, Appropriations/Base Budget Committee, Education/Higher Education Committee, Senate Finance Committee, Pensions and Retirement and Aging Committee, and Rules and Operations of the Senate Committee.
Waddell’s current term ends on January 1, 2025. She is running for re-election to the North Carolina State Senate to represent District 40. She is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024.
As of the 2020 Census, North Carolina state senators represented an average of 209,079 residents. After the 2010 Census, each member represented 191,316 residents. North Carolina State Senate District 40, which Waddell represents, is part of this demographic.
