Early Life and Education

Josh West was born on September 19, 1976, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, he spent his formative years in Grove, Oklahoma. After graduating from Grove High School in 1995, he pursued higher education at Missouri Valley College on a football scholarship.

Military Service

In 1996, Josh West began his training for the U.S. Army, and he successfully graduated in 1997. His military service took him to various locations, with deployments primarily in Afghanistan and Iraq. Unfortunately, during a firefight in Karbala, Iraq, on October 16, 2003, West sustained injuries. Tragically, several members of his team lost their lives during that same incident, including his battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Kim Orlando. Notably, Orlando was the highest-ranked soldier to die during the Iraq War. West himself was shot in both legs and his abdomen. His subsequent year of therapy was dedicated to regaining the use of his legs. In 2005, after nine years of service, he was medically retired from the U.S. Army.

Political Career

Josh West’s political journey began when he ran in the Republican Party primary for the Oklahoma House of Representatives District 5 in 2016. His victory in the primary with 60.7 percent of the vote paved the way for his general election win. West has been serving as a representative since 2017, representing the 5th district. Notably, he was re-elected by default in 2020.

Throughout his tenure, Josh West has taken on significant roles within the Oklahoma House of Representatives. From December 2018 until January 2023, he served as the Majority Leader. Additionally, he currently chairs the Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs and is an integral part of the House Leadership team.

West’s commitment to service extends beyond politics. His military service earned him several accolades, including the Bronze Star (with valor), Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal (five times), among others.

Representative Josh West continues to make a positive impact on his community, drawing from both his military background and his dedication to public service.
