Gregorio B. Matías Rosario was born on April 2, 1972, in the Dominican Republic. He has resided in Puerto Rico since the age of 3. Senator Matías Rosario is married to Mrs. Raquel López Santos, with whom he has three children; he also has other children from previous relationships. Ten years ago, he accepted the Lord as his Savior and is a practitioner of the Evangelical faith. He obtained an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College in New York State. For 28 years, he served the people as a member of the Puerto Rico Police, receiving recognition on fourteen occasions. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and subsequently to the rank of Lieutenant II. During his career as a union leader, he served as Vice President of the Association of Organized Police (APO), where he achieved significant milestones, such as: Social Security benefits for police officers; and more than six hundred and eighty million dollars ($680,000,000) through negotiations with the Financial Oversight and Management Board. On May 28, 2020, he was sworn in for the first time as Senator at Large, representing the New Progressive Party. At the beginning of his term, he filed several bills for the Puerto Rico Police and other first responders. He also fought for the retirement of public servants, enabling 1,130 government employees to retire. Additionally, he cast the decisive vote for the Law to end Puerto Rico’s bankruptcy. On August 9, 2020, he was favored in the New Progressive Party Primaries, and in the General Elections on November 3, 2020, he was elected as Senator at Large. Subsequently, on January 2, 2021, he was sworn in as Senator at Large for the 2021-2024 term. Following that, on June 2, 2024, in the New Progressive Party Primaries, he was again elected as a candidate for Senator at Large. Later, in the General Elections on November 5, 2024, he was elected Senator at Large, being named Majority Leader of the Senate of Puerto Rico and Chairman of the Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee for the 2025-2028 term.
