About Senator Jamie Barlucea - Democratic Representative of Puerto Rico
Jamie Barlucea Rodríguez was born in Ponce on April 7, 1990, the daughter of Jaime H. Barlucea Maldonado, former mayor of Adjuntas, and Jacqueline Rodríguez González, a public servant. She completed her primary and secondary education in public schools in Adjuntas, graduating from high school in 2008. She began her university career at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, concentrating on Comparative International Politics and Gender as Power. Subsequently, she graduated with honors with a Master’s in Public Administration, concentrating on Budgeting and Personnel Administration. During her master’s studies, she presented her thesis titled: “The Participation of Women in Public and Political Life: A Perspective from Gender Equality.” She then pursued law studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico School of Law, graduating with honors in 2020. During her years in law school, she was a member of and held leadership positions in various student organizations, including the Women’s Rights Organization, where she served as Vice President. In 2012, she served as Intergovernmental Coordinator in the Senate of Puerto Rico, planning and coordinating services for constituents of the Senatorial District of Ponce. In 2013, she served as an Electoral Advisor at the State Elections Commission. Later, in 2014, she served as a Legislative Assistant to the Senate Minority Leader, Hon. Larry Seilhamer, developing public policy. Subsequently, she held the position of Assistant Director of the Joint Commission for Public-Private Partnerships (P3), chaired by Senator Larry Seilhamer. Since 2021, she has served as a public policy advisor for the Multisectoral Council in Support of the Homeless Population, under the Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration, promoting initiatives for the benefit of the island’s most vulnerable populations in conjunction with municipalities, government entities, and the third sector. She contributed to the analysis and preparation of the Strategic and Action Plan to Address the Homeless Population of Puerto Rico. She belonged to the Advisory Board of Women Veterans led by the Office of the Veteran’s Advocate and contributed to the development of initiatives and strategic plans aimed at ensuring mental health services and suicide prevention for female veterans. In the June 2024 Primaries, she sought to become one of the New Progressive Party candidates for the Senate for the District of Ponce, resulting in her election to the first position as the youngest candidate. In the general elections of November 2024, she prevailed in the race and was elected Senator for the District of Ponce, becoming the youngest senator of the new majority. In the Senate of Puerto Rico, she chairs the Housing and Social Welfare Committee. At the same time, she is the Vice President of the Labor and Labor Relations Committee and secretary of the following committees: Municipal Affairs Committee and Agriculture Committee. She is also a member of the following committees: Education, Art, and Culture Ethics Family, Women, Elderly, and People with Functional Diversity Government Innovation, Reform, and Appointments Judiciary Public Safety and Veteran Affairs Tourism, Natural, and Environmental Resources Her focus will be on crafting legislative measures aimed at ensuring access to affordable housing and quality education, addressing inequalities and improving the health system, developing employment and income opportunities and programs for our youth and women, and attending to the country’s most vulnerable populations with a multisectoral approach.
