John Ragan for Representative
John D. Ragan Jr. is an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. He represents District 33, which encompasses parts of Anderson County, in the Tennessee House of Representatives. Ragan was first elected to the General Assembly in 2010, succeeding Jim Hackworth.
Early Life and Education: John D. Ragan Jr. was born on December 16, 1948, in Morganton, North Carolina. He attended several universities, including the University of North Carolina, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern California, and the University of Tennessee. Ragan graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1971 with a degree in Engineering Science. He later earned a master’s degree in Aeronautical Sciences from Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University.
Career: Ragan served as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force for 24 years, working as an Air Force pilot. He also worked as a business consultant, advising numerous companies (including some on the Fortune 100 list). Additionally, Ragan briefly served as a substitute teacher in local school systems.
Political Career: In his 2010 campaign, Ragan focused on education, illegal immigration, and the economy. He has been re-elected multiple times, winning in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020. Notably, he voted to overturn teacher union collective bargaining rights but supported collaborative bargaining. Ragan’s dedication to public service continues as he seeks re-election in the upcoming term.
