Josie Leavitt has been a dedicated member of the Vermont House of Representatives since January 4, 2023, representing the Grand Isle-Chittenden District. Her journey to Vermont began in 1996 when she moved to the state and founded the Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne. This venture marked the beginning of her deep-rooted connection with the Vermont community.

Josie holds a Bachelor’s degree in English, earned in 1987, and a Master of Arts in the Teaching of English, completed in 1992, both from Columbia University. Her academic background laid a strong foundation for her career, which has been marked by significant contributions to various nonprofit organizations. She has served as a development associate, development director, and executive director of the Pride Center of Vermont. Additionally, she has held the position of director of development at the Vermont Bar Foundation.

Beyond her professional achievements, Josie is actively involved in local governance and community service. She is the Vice Chair of the Grand Isle Selectboard and a board member of the Champlain Islands Food Shelf. Her commitment to public service is further demonstrated by her role in the Vermont Legislature, where she serves on the House Committee on Agriculture, Food Resiliency, and Forestry, as well as the Summer Government Accountability Committee.

Josie’s passion for the arts is evident in her work as a stand-up comedian and storyteller, performing throughout the state. She resides in Grand Isle with her partner and their rescue dog, Allie.
