Joan Fitzgerald is a Democratic Party member serving in the Wisconsin State Assembly. She represents the 46th Assembly District, having assumed office on January 6, 2025. Her current term is set to end on January 4, 2027.

Born on October 4, 1964, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Joan Fitzgerald grew up in Greendale, where she graduated from Greendale High School in 1982. She pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, earning a bachelor’s degree in education in 1986 and later a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction in 1994. Her professional career spanned over three decades as a high school math teacher in Jefferson, Wisconsin, before retiring in 2020. Beyond her teaching career, she also worked as a tax preparer and was actively involved in community organizations such as the Jefferson Education Association, the Fort Atkinson Booster Club, and Moms Demand Action.

Joan Fitzgerald’s political journey began in 2019 when she was appointed to the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors. She was subsequently elected to a full term in 2020 and re-elected in 2022. In 2024, she announced her candidacy for the Wisconsin State Assembly. Following a significant redistricting process, she ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and later defeated her Republican opponent, Jenifer Quimby, in the general election.

Throughout her career, Joan Fitzgerald has been a dedicated advocate for education, community development, and public safety. She resides in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, with her husband, Gerald Fitzgerald, and their two children. Her commitment to public service and her community continues to define her work in the Wisconsin State Assembly.
